North Cascades National Park 2010:  cold steep misty beautiful

Olympia National Park 2010: 0 dark thirty Dan & Bill hear a loud high pitched ghostly wail to our left. Behold an Elk looking at us. Always remember to pack an extra pair of shorts.

Casamero Pueblo

This Anasazi outlier pueblo is 19 miles west of Grants NM. Short walk to the ruins. Occupied between 1000 and 1125. Nestled near the sandstone cliffs of Tecolote Mesa. The "owl's eyes" give the mesa its name. 22 ground floor rooms. Large and small kiva. With every breath we inhaled molecules of breath from those who lived here. Imagine that. Six second story rooms may have been built above the ground floors. Notice the early morning shadows at the small kiva entrance in the slide show below. The sacred kiva floor waits for the faithful to return. A prehistoric road connected Casamero Pueblo to another outlier across the ancient landscape. As daylight retreats beyond the mountains Casamero Pueblo is slowly conquered by darkness.

Zuni Acoma Trail

What trail? We hiked this ancient Indian trail across the El Malpais lava flows near Grants NM. We were invited to "experience earth in a primoridial way." We did. My shoe tops were shredded by lava before we reached half way into our twenty mile hike. We scrambled up, down, and across lava flows and fissures. Half way across the rugged basalt flows was enough for us. We put about 10 miles of shoe destroying trekking into the effort. Wore the rubber off my trekking poles too. Manly! Fissure jumping and time traveling were highlights. The tall cairns were a portal allowing us to time travel 3.5 million years ago and watch Mt. Taylor erupt. We didn't stay long. We found a 2000 year old cow pie. Interesting. Advice if you have the opportunity to hike this trail and see beautiful flowers: Don't sniff unless you want your nose pierced. Enjoy the slide show below.

Warning! Do not sniff.
