13th Century Cistercian Abby

Near Rostock Germany. Doberan Minster is a 13th Century Cistercian Abby-Church founded in 1171 dedicated in 1368 until dissolution of the Abby in 1552 through the reformation. Monks numbered near 500 but declined to 100 over time:

All are welcome.

The main Altar was created around 1300.

The monks sang and worshiped facing each other. The choir sat closer to the altar and the lay brothers sat further back.

This is a two side crucifix made of copper. The green is a preservative that is interacting with the copper. One one side it can be seen at the far end of the Abby. On the other side it is at the Altar of a smaller worship area. This is from the smaller side. The cross is shown as the tree of life using Christ’s words in John15:5. Christ is here shown as the life giving and triumphant tree conquering Satan.

Many nobles and family members are buried within the Abby. Some in a humble manner thankful to be buried within the Abby. Even after the reformation nobles and important people continued to be buried here. During the reformation this Abby church became a worship place for the evangelical Lutheran congregation:

Others in more elevated positions. We think this the tomb of Duke Adolf Friedrich I of Mecklenburg in case you want to know. We assume that is a statue of his wife.

This once stood vertically and is the king of Sweden Albrecht III and probably the queen. They are not buried here.

Beautiful stain glass windows around the church.

We have no idea.

About 3/4 of the way away from the altar. Being this far from the altar we are unsure of how it was used. Sermon? Readings from the gospel? Any ideas?

Ornate Confessional, no? With 500 brothers I’m thinking there were more of these...

This is an ossuary built in about 1250 to house the bones of monks whose remains were buried in the good earth.

This Abby was filled with interesting objects to view, study, ponder, appreciate and photograph. The pace and scope of the tour prevented us from seeing many of the important pieces of medieval glass and much more. This Abby is worth a long unhurried visit. Onward to Baltic Sea Cruise 5.
